I own multiple Samyang lenses and shoot astro photography. This lens has been reviewed as being one of the best for coma control and quality at F1.4 . When the box arrived it was not sealed which I though was strange (since all other samyang come sealed) I took it on a testPoor Quality at F1.4 and almost all stars including center points had severe coma. I tested it in multi conditions and from F1.4 to F4 each shot had stars center which had coma and in the top left stars were totally out of focus. After F4 the stars became much more clearer but that defies the idea of the lens.If you search the net and reviews and feedback of these lenses you will see a lot of others have had similar problems, it happens!Life is to short to be angry and Amazon and Carmarthen Cameras refunded my money straight away when i returned it. I must compliment them on their customer service, they were fair and in return I bought another type of lens.I recommend this lens to everyone, but you have to also consider that from time to time you will get a bad copy. Just do a search on the internet and you will see what i mean.

The box contained dust and a piece of old sticky tape, the lens had wear marks on the bayonet fitting.

Firstly to provide some context to this review, I reviewed this lens alongside the Samyang 35mm lens using a Canon 5D which has a full-frame sensor (and therefore no CCD cropping).As a child when I first got to play with cameras, I had a 50mm and 35mm lens. Having then moved to zoom lenses I didn't think I would go back but there's three big advantages of prime lenses:1. You can get seriously shallow depth of field (that lovely effect of the background being blurred, which is caled bokeh)2. They are fast glass (because the aperture can really be opened up, it means you can get the exposure/aperture combination to take the photo without being underexposed (especially at dusk) for risk of having too long an exposure which may blur or show movement)3. It makes you think (you have to move to the right location to get the image you want rather than cropping what you have once you're home.)At the more professional end of the market the bigger the aperture (lower f number) the more expensive the lens. In essence, this lens is competing with the Canon EF 24mm f/1.4 but at a price closer to the Canon EF 24 f/2.8 Or is it...The key thing to be aware of is that this lens is completely manual and does not integrate to Canon's EXIF tags (the information stored on digital photos to help you remember what you did in terms of settings). Focus is manual (although the ring is nice and secure and the aperture setting to highlight depth of field is well shown). Aperture is also manual, and given the aperture and lens name (which would tell you the focal length) is not recorded with the photos you have to write down what you have taken if you want to try and learn how to improve on your photos.The lens is plastic but it feels quite well made and the mount is metal. The lens is very heavy, a good 20% heavier than the Canon f1.4 equivalent and about double the weight of the Canon f/2.8.In terms of the tests, I was focused on low light photography and also portraits trying to get the background nicely blurred. The box had been opened before I'd received it so was probably already a return. All dues to Amazon who refunded within the day but I'm not happy that the lens was in an opened box ! There's a real trade-off between price/performance and ease of use with this lens. Read on to understand before purchase.Pros- Well made- Optically of good quality- Half the price of the Canon equivalentCons- Manual focus- Manual exposure control- Lens does not automatically show "wide open" viewfinder image- EXIF data will not include the aperture (used by editing software)Samyang is a new name for SLR camera lenses, being a South Korean company. This lens is available for several brands of camera, with varying levels of communication passed to the camera body. This Canon fit lens has no communication with the body at all, the headline missing function therefore being auto-focus but there are other functions that we take for granted nowadays that are not possible using this lens. Presumably this was done to keep costs down by not having to license Canon's mount technology.The most obviously attractive feature about the lens is the cost - it is less than half the price of the equivalent Canon L series 24mm f1.8. If you had a desire for that lens but can't justify the expense then this could be an option BUT consider that you will have to adjust the way you work. For landscape photography on a tripod where speed is not a particular issue, this could be a decent purchase. I'll explain more...The first thing you'll notice is that the lens is quite heavy and appears to be well made. The focus ring is quite stiff and the aperture ring (yes, there's an aperture ring on the lens) has a satisfying click to it. Missing is the plastic bump that shows you where to line the lens up with the body. At first this meant a bit of juggling around trying to find where to line it up. Eventually I discovered that aligning the "1.4/24mm" marking on the lens with the red dot on the body (of my 5D MkIII) was the right place.Switch the camera on and the first thing you'll notice is that the LCD display shows '00' where the aperture should be.
