I disliked the fact this item is advertised as the B&W usm version but I was sent the same speck lens 70-300mm but not a usm version!, not sure if this was a pick error or a listing error but I wasn’t to happy with the online chat help or the fact I’ve had to go and buy the lens from Jessops as more of a cost to do a job!

mr p m farmerGreat lens - stabilisation is voodoo, focus is fast and sharp. Great quality.
catThe build quality of this lens is excellent from canon. Even out at 300mm its fully stable and gives excellent results. Quality from Canon.
JulienDLight enough to use without a tripod.
John EvansGreat lens sold at a bargain price given that it was so nearly new! Lens was in even better condition than anticipated.
RobWWOW this lens is outstanding ,picture quality great at 70mm and same though out the zoom to 300mm build quality fantastic if you looking for a great lens for wildlife get it you will not be disappointed
SteveExcellent value
roychetGreat len's.
David Cheesemaneverything you would expect in an L series lens, crisp clean images,so cant fault the lens, the delivery however, lens was left outside will no protection from anything...lens is superb ,shame about the delivery
LeeA good lens, as usual from Canon, but for the price I can't help but feel I expected a little but more ... slightly easier to use and certainly not as heavy. I had to have it repaired within three months of buying it as an internal part failed (first time in 30 years with a Canon lens) and was told by the shop it wasn't the first time they had had one of these back.
Would I recommend it? Yes, just about. Would I buy the same again if this was stolen? Not a chance.

MogodonWell made lens with smooth action and very compact and not too heavy. However disappointing long range optics for a lens of this price.Very poor at anything above 200mmDisappointing overall purchase
chipfatSuperb lens paired with a 7D. This has fast become one of my favorite lenses. Quiet, fast and accurate auto-focus, superb image quality colour and contrast.
Mr. M. PriceARRIVED ON TIME WELL PACKAGED. THIS ITEM IS EXACTLY IS AS DESCRIBED AND EXCEEDS MY EXPECTATION.
C.E.ISHERWOODIf you want a lens to cover most jobs, this is the one. Fitted it to my 70D. Now I only need to take one lens when I go out, mind you, its quite heavy, so you would not want to carry to many more.
Mike LineAn excellent lens, good and sharp. A bit heavy, but that is to be expected with quality optics.
Ms B. R. JonesEarlier this year I upgraded from a 60D to a 5D Mk III, and decided that I needed some better lenses to go with it. I bought this EF 70-300 fL IS lens from a certain on-line retailer who offers interest free credit over one year, making the lens affordable for me. It replaces an older non-L version. The upgrade in terms of IQ over my old equipment is nothing short of spectacular. I don't do much in the way of bird photography, so 300mm is plenty of reach for most of my purposes, but I did recently manage to get some shots of birds in flight which really blew me away. A lot of this was down to the 2 mode image stabilization system, which has an excellent system allowing stabilization only in the vertical axis so that panning shots can still be taken. The other setting is Canon's usual L class multi-axis 4 stop stabilization which is priceless at 300mm end. After my old non-L lens, focusing is lightning quick ensuring that I now rarely miss a shot. Images are razor sharp across the range irrespective of aperture. There is some CA visible around the periphery of pictures at f4, but this is very minor compared to what I'm used to and can be automatically corrected in Photoshop using the lens pre-sets.Yes, like some others, when I have been using a different lens for a while and come back to this one, I find myself fumbling around to find the focusing ring, but that doesn't last and really is not what you would call a problem.Update. I'm currently on holiday in Mauritius and its rainy season. 35C temperatures and 90% humidity make for a challenging photography environment. I spent some time in the botanic gardens in scalding heat followed by torrential downpours and am happy to report that the weather proofing of this lens (+ 5D Mk III camers) worked brilliantly. It did not not miss a beat. Coming out of an air conditioned hotel room into the heat and humidity resulted in the outer lens face fogging (with this mass of glass it took some time to warm up and clear) but absolutely nothing got inside the lens/camera. The depth if colour in the photos taken in this environment are just astounding.
BearmanThis is the most expensive lens I've ever owned, so it was a huge leap to justify it & then buy it.It's attached to my 7D.I used to have a EF 100-300mm f/4.5-5.6 USM, and had a few issues with it missing focus. When I realised that for my photography I was using it for about 90% of my photos, and that I wasn't getting quite the quality I wanted, I decided to go for this L lens. And quite frankly it's stunning! I hardly ever miss a shot now, focussing is fast and accurate, zoom smooth (with no creep), bokeh lovely. And nothing lacking in the IQ stakes.A lot of reviews seem to have issues with the placement of the zoom ring. However, for good hand-held support, you really want one hand up near the front of the lens to achieve a good balance, and so in that setup the zoom ring is in fact ideally placed. For me at least! And of course on my crop 7D, it effectively goes to 460mm, yet the IS keeps things under control wonderfully.I've owned it for almost 3 years now, no issues at all, just a great bit of kit, and the best lens I've ever bought (and that goes back 35 years!).Sheer quality! Most of my pictures on https://500px.com/moushu were taken with this lens. One thing I've just noticed about the Amazon review system: the reviews & scores for this lens seem to be lumped in with those for at least 2 other lenses - surely that makes a mockery of the whole process???
MoushuThis is quite possibly the perfect travel zoom to compliment any shorter lens you may have such as the standard kit lens.Pro's -lightweight - for experienced users, very compact for hand holdingSize - even with the lens hood on. (makes a difference in the contrast of the image by using it)Shower proof - not tried in a tropical down pour!Bokeh - Creates a real creamy background with the right combo of Aperture and distance to subjectSpeed - Not referring to the F4.0 but more focusing speed. in servo, you can capture 7/8 out of 10 shots of subjects at speed - Birds ETCVibrant images - subjective - can produce pleasingly warm imagesimage stabiliser - It really is a god send when hand holding.Con's -For some Newbies, it maybe a little too intimidating, heavy and a little large especially once the lens hood is on.the copy of lens that I have is a little out and front focus' by +10. however, depending on the camera body you have, this is easily adjusted by Micro Adjustment of the lens ( check Youtube for more info)Can creep sometimes. As I also sometimes use it on a Mono/Tripod, I have purchased a tripod mount. without that, it is just not stable enough on a stand and you have to use the Mirror Lock and Self timer to get sharp images.I prefer this lens over the Canon 70-300 DO lens which in my opinion is a little less capable in image quality but definitely more compact and travel friendly. The next step up from this lens is the Canon 300L f4, around the same cost, but fixed at one focal length and definitely not a travel lens, however, it does provide the the next step in image quality.I am very happy with the Canon 70-300L and for the price and image quality, unless you are photographing wildlife or sports to be printed at huge sizes, this lens gives a professional image straight from the camera.A great buy!
Abdul N QuraishiThe Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Telephoto is designed to deliver ultra-high quality images along with lightning fast operation. The lens brings a favourite zoom range to the celebrated Canon L-series. It features 2 Ultra Low Dispersion (UD) elements for improved image quality and reduced chromatic aberration, and incorporates a floating focusing mechanism for sharpness from close up to infinity. The IS system increases usability by approximately four stops and the fast Ultra-Sonic Motor (USM) and inner and rear focusing system allows for fast quiet Autofocus as close as 3.9' (1.2m).
The EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM features a function that prevents erroneous operation when the lens is mounted on a tripod or monopod. The lens is dust and water resistant, and has a Fluorine coating that keeps soiling, smears and fingerprints to a minimum. The lens is perfect for portraiture or to bring what's far away up close. This addition to the L-series is guaranteed to perform.
