I bought this lens to have a budget way in to macro (close up) photography. I now use it as a standard lens when I don't want to take my big zoom lens (18-140mm which is amazing but heavy). Macro takes a bit of practice and this lens is good for that. Very sharp and easy to manually focus. You need to get in really close so great for still objects but tricky for insects etc which get scared. As a standard lens you can switch the close up range off so that it autofocusses faster and again, really sharp. Technically on a Nikon DX camera "standard" is 35mm but there's so little difference it works well for general photography. f2.8 is wide enough for me too. Great little lens.
Robbie WilliamsNice lens works nicely and good results
LucyFast lens that gives phenomenal pictures, I am using this for landscape and Street photography. And the macro or micro for close up on plants and insects. I love how close it gets into the subject and the depth of field it gives is mind blowing. Buy one and you won’t be disappointed.
HarryWorks well, nice lens, no quibbles
A. DixonAmazing Lens, totally worth the money! Very crisp close up photos!

David WThe lens was returned for a refund owing to the focus ring being stiff to turn and being inclined to be jerky with fine adjustments. Also, attaching the lens to the camera body required a firmer twist action than my other Nikon lenses. Thankfully, Amazon provides a no-fuss returns procedure.
Pharosexcellent
John StathisI cannot speak highly enough about this lense, I use to for the obvious macro uses such as flowers and plants, but it's also great for candid portraits when out with friends.
Andrew WoodI loved this lens!
CalPerfect lens for bloggers who like to take snaps of work, such as nail art, makeup and food.
This lens has a built in AF motor - which is helpful for people on the budget end of Nikon bodies, as they don;t have AF motors built into them.
The images produced with the aperture Wide open are not soft in the centre (but are at the extreme edges) and the focus is suitable considering the relative low cost of the lens (especially if you can get it with a cash back offer).

BishopMagGreat as a walk round lens as well as for macro use which means you don't have to change lenses.
HadgeRecommended to me by my brother - who now probably feels like he's created a monster as I'm finding it so easy to use... and have taken oodles of pics with it.
Amazon CustomerSo this was my first macro lens, i had never shot macro photography before but wanted to give it a try. Heres my simple review
Positives:
1) lens is extremely well built and feels good in the hand.
2) Quick and smooth autofocus
3) Tack sharp, i mean really really sharp this can be used for many other applications other than macro as i did.
4) Light, you would hardly notice it on the camera
Negatives:
Only one negative and thats that its too short a focal length for live macro photography i.e. insects. For still life yes you will get away with it but if your looking online at those cool shots of a spiders 8 eyes or the bee collecting pollen from the flower and you can see the hair on the legs then im afraid on a dx body you will need a minimum focal length of 85mm. But that is it, other than that this lens is fantastic, maybe nikon should of made it a regular prime with close focusing instead of labelling it a macro.

SeanORVery good lens for more than just macro, use it for filming gives very sharp shots
Ell234Fantastic lens. The macro is brilliant and the bokeh in the background is amazing. For any photographers wanting a cheaper macro lens, i would definitely recommend this and it worked brilliantly with my Nikon D5300. The photos are very crisp and the colours through the lens are great. I would highly recommend for any photographer
Tristani bought this lens to replace my Tamron 90mm macro lens , the reason was the Tamron was way to big and cumbersome to carry about on casual strolls , admittedly this little nikon has to be brought much closer to the subject to get life size images which can be a problem with insects but thats its only quirk , image wise its much sharper than the tamron is vastly superior handling wise and just seems right on a nikon DX body . im so happy i made the change over as i consider the Nikon 40 far superior ( even the insect problem can be solved with patience and stealth ) and most importantly i do actually enjoy taking it out on my woodland walks , thats not something i could ever say about that bazooka like Tamron its replaced . This little beaut is the perfect lens for fungi photography by the way if thats you niche !

dark heartBuilt to capture the finest detail, the AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G from Nikon delivers stunning close-up shots exposing hidden worlds of patterns and textures practically impossible to detect with the human eye. Wonderfully easy-to-handle, this lens is versatile enough not to limit photographers to one particular subject, shooting macro, portrait and general subjects with outstanding sharpness and beautiful bokeh.
Remarkably light, compact and agile, the AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G lens serves as an exceptional complement to DX cameras.
Up Close and PersonalProviding high resolution and contrast, this standard focal length lens is a great choice for intricate food photography or detailed product shots. Focusing as close as 0.163m (from focal plane) and boasting a 1:1 reproduction ratio, the AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G offers true macro performance for close-up photography[1]. With a fast maximum aperture of f/2.8, subjects can be singled out against a pleasantly blurred background and sharper handheld shots are achievable in low-light.
Providing outstanding optical performance, the lens comprises 9 elements in 7 groups and a seven rounded-blade iris diaphragm which renders a beautiful, natural background blur at its wider aperture settings. With the Close-Range-Correction system, the lens elements are configured in a floating element design wherein each lens group moves independently to provide superior picture quality when shooting at close distances.
Silent PrecisionNikon's AF-S technology is yet another reason why professional photographers like NIKKOR lenses. Nikon’s exclusive Silent Wave Motor (SWM) converts travelling waves into rotational energy to focus the optics. This enables high-speed autofocusing that’s extremely accurate and super quiet. So for discrete shooting you can set up the shot in an instant and camera focusing won’t disturb sensitive subjects like wildlife.
Combining ease-of-use and maximum precision the AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G lens has two focus modes. In addition to Manual focus, Manual-priority autofocus (M/A) allows you to switch from autofocus to manual operation with virtually no time lag, even during AF servo operation and regardless of the AF mode in use. This gives all the benefits of fast, automatic focusing while still retaining the ability to make fine focus adjustments before taking the shot.
NIKKOR QualityCleverly crafted in a way that only an optical manufacturer can understand, Nikon creates technologies that make NIKKOR lenses the best choice for any type of still or moving imagery. Omitting the need for an aperture ring, G-type lens aperture is controlled electronically through the camera. Electronic adjustment is not only very efficient but also allows Nikon to place a weather sealing on the lens mount, so you can shoot with complete confidence.
Small enough to be carried everywhere, the AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G lens from Nikon will reveal hidden beauty in the smallest subject and the greatest of landscapes.
[1] The actual focal length of 40mm has an angle of view equivalent to that of a 60mm lens in 35mm [135] format.
