Superb for astrophotography at f2 onwards
Reviewed on Amazon.co.uk

Great wide angle lens for astrophotography. Seriously blows my canon f4 17-40mm L lens away in terms of light throughout and coma. From f2 oneatds there’s really no coma. At wide open f1.4 you’ll still see a little around the edges of a full frame camera (I use a canon 6D). Docked one mark as it’s not autofocus, which means you have to be careful with manual focus for landscapes and star shots. Also note it’s not weather sealed, so be careful in humid conditions. But for the price and starscapes it’s a fantastic lens

Quick Delivery, Friendly service but bad copy of the lens.
Reviewed on Amazon.co.uk

I own multiple Samyang lenses and shoot astro photography. This lens has been reviewed as being one of the best for coma control and quality at F1.4 . When the box arrived it was not sealed which I though was strange (since all other samyang come sealed) I took it on a testPoor Quality at F1.4 and almost all stars including center points had severe coma. I tested it in multi conditions and from F1.4 to F4 each shot had stars center which had coma and in the top left stars were totally out of focus. After F4 the stars became much more clearer but that defies the idea of the lens.If you search the net and reviews and feedback of these lenses you will see a lot of others have had similar problems, it happens!Life is to short to be angry and Amazon and Carmarthen Cameras refunded my money straight away when i returned it. I must compliment them on their customer service, they were fair and in return I bought another type of lens.I recommend this lens to everyone, but you have to also consider that from time to time you will get a bad copy. Just do a search on the internet and you will see what i mean.

Some of these have flaws
Reviewed on Amazon.co.uk

I had read that quite a few astrophotographers had noticed that the images had a defect at one side. I had taken daylight photographs and had not noticed anything odd but the first photo of stars showed clear distortion to the right side of the image. People sent these lenses back and get another .... you may not get a good one initially. I've sent mine back and ordered a 14mm f2.8 instead. Zoom in to the attached image and look at the left compared with right.

I have just done a few tests, no real night shots, which is why I bought it.Using Focal software, in theory the quality is poor under f2.2In practice, it compared favorably (at f2.8) with a much more expensive 25mm lens.On Nikon cameras the electronic contacts are great for using camera controlled aperture.Infinity marker is a bit off and the build quality could be a bit higher.

Little use on a full-size sensor camera
Reviewed on Amazon.co.uk

Firstly to provide some context to this review, I reviewed this lens alongside the Samyang 35mm lens using a Canon 5D which has a full-frame sensor (and therefore no CCD cropping). As a child when I first got to play with cameras, I had a 50mm and 35mm lens. Having then moved to zoom lenses I didn't think I would go back but there's three big advantages of prime lenses:1. You can get seriously shallow depth of field (that lovely effect of the background being blurred, which is caled bokeh)2. They are fast glass (because the aperture can really be opened up, it means you can get the exposure/aperture combination to take the photo without being underexposed (especially at dusk) for risk of having too long an exposure which may blur or show movement)3. It makes you think (you have to move to the right location to get the image you want rather than cropping what you have once you're home.)At the more professional end of the market the bigger the aperture (lower f number) the more expensive the lens. In essence, this lens is competing with the Canon EF 24mm f/1.4 but at a price closer to the Canon EF 24 f/2.8 Or is it...The key thing to be aware of is that this lens is completely manual and does not integrate to Canon's EXIF tags (the information stored on digital photos to help you remember what you did in terms of settings). Focus is manual (although the ring is nice and secure and the aperture setting to highlight depth of field is well shown). Aperture is also manual, and given the aperture and lens name (which would tell you the focal length) is not recorded with the photos you have to write down what you have taken if you want to try and learn how to improve on your photos. The lens is plastic but it feels quite well made and the mount is metal. The lens is very heavy, a good 20% heavier than the Canon f1.4 equivalent and about double the weight of the Canon f/2.8.In terms of the tests, I was focused on low light photography and also portraits trying to get the background nicely blurred. I found on the fu

A duff one

This lens has really good reviews but the copy I received wouldn't focus properly. Not only that but there was terrible coma which looked like the lens was faulty. The box had been opened before I'd received it so was probably already a return. All dues to Amazon who refunded within the day but I'm not happy that the lens was in an opened box ! Amazon isn't that much cheaper than a high street retailer so I expected a pristine product.I might try another copy but I'm a bit reticent about receiving another duff one.

CARE! A good lens optically but consider the manual operations carefully before purchase
Reviewed on Amazon.co.uk

There's a real trade-off between price/performance and ease of use with this lens. Read on to understand before purchase.Pros- Well made- Optically of good quality- Half the price of the Canon equivalentCons- Manual focus- Manual exposure control- Lens does not automatically show "wide open" viewfinder image- EXIF data will not include the aperture (used by editing software)Samyang is a new name for SLR camera lenses, being a South Korean company. This lens is available for several brands of camera, with varying levels of communication passed to the camera body. This Canon fit lens has no communication with the body at all, the headline missing function therefore being auto-focus but there are other functions that we take for granted nowadays that are not possible using this lens. Presumably this was done to keep costs down by not having to license Canon's mount technology. The most obviously attractive feature about the lens is the cost - it is less than half the price of the equivalent Canon L series 24mm f1.8. If you had a desire for that lens but can't justify the expense then this could be an option BUT consider that you will have to adjust the way you work. For landscape photography on a tripod where speed is not a particular issue, this could be a decent purchase. I'll explain more...The first thing you'll notice is that the lens is quite heavy and appears to be well made. The focus ring is quite stiff and the aperture ring (yes, there's an aperture ring on the lens) has a satisfying click to it. Missing is the plastic bump that shows you where to line the lens up with the body. At first this meant a bit of juggling around trying to find where to line it up. Eventually I discovered that aligning the "1.4/24mm" marking on the lens with the red dot on the body (of my 5D MkIII) was the right place.Switch the camera on and the first thing you'll notice is that the LCD display shows '00' where the aperture should be. That's because the lens can't tell the body which aperture it is set to. Raise the camera to you

Excellent results - but would I buy this lens?
Reviewed on Amazon.co.uk

First impressions are that this is a well made, good quality lens; although quite large at around 102mm long and not light at 680g. In use the initial impressions are confirmed, it is capable of taking good quality, sharp pictures. However, that is not the end of the story, for while it is capable of impressive results achieving them is another matter. This particular model is listed for a Canon, (although the lens instructions included in the box contain information on use with Pentax, Sony, Konica Minolta, and Four-Thirds cameras) here it used with a Canon EOS camera. The instructions suggest manually selecting the aperture and setting the camera to M, or with some Canon to Av where the camera will automatically set the shutter speed. In practice I found using the Av setting worked well in good light, but not well in poor light; however setting the camera to P achieved good results with poor light; however further experiment is no doubt needed to get the best out of it. As most of my photography is taken with aperture the priority this works well for me.Focusing is another matter though, this has to be set manually. This is nothing unusual, when I started out in photography it was really the only way, yet I do not find it easy with this lens. The problem may partly be mine as I now have to contend with varifocal spectacles, troublesome a the best of times but a real problem when looking through a viewfinder (on a camera with a large rear viewing screen this would no doubt be a lot easier); so accurate focusing I found very difficult - add to that the need to view initially at full aperture so as to be able to see well and then having to stop down to the chosen aperture the whole process can become tiresome. However set the camera on a tripod and it is a different matter, although not removing the problems it does make managing them easier. Results are good, in some cases impressive, general shots especially, but even with relative close-ups it turns out a good shot (although this is not a close up lens, it will
