Versatile lens

I chose this 15-85mm lens as an upgrade to the 18-55mm kit lens that came with camera (originally a 100D, now using it with a 90D). I prefer landscape photography, so the wider end of the zoom is useful to me and was the reason I opted for this particular mid-range zoom. It saves me changing out to a 10-18mm as often, and I find with it going up to 85mm it also covers plenty of other useful scenarios. So far I'm finding image quality excellent, and the zoom range makes for a great walkabout lens for my needs.Build quality is solid, it's quite a heavy lens and I've read about lens creep in other reviews - my copy doesn't creep at present, but I can feel how it wouldn't take much. Not really a problem for how I'm using it though. Overall it's far superior to the kit lens in build quality, image quality, and overall features (as it should be at the price point). I picked it up in a warehouse deal and so the value seems particularly good.

Very nice lens. Easy to use and oozes quality. Perhaps not as solid as Canon's pro-series lenses but still feels very well made.

Sharpness Almost On A Par With L Series Lenses
Reviewed on Amazon.co.uk

Cracking little lens. I bought this to replace the kit lens which came with my 350D (A looong time ago), and was really impressed with the quality of the images. I upgraded my cameras over time (40D, 7D) and finally parted with it when I jumped to full frame, and then only because it wasn't compatible. The only problem I had was when an internal ribbon cable cracked after several years of regular use - annoying, but to be expected after years of heavy use - necessitating a trip to the repair shop.I would put the image quality almost on a par with the L series lenses, and it was a massive improvement on the kit lens - sharper, with much less chromatic aberration and far better focusing.

Awesome Lens
Reviewed on Amazon.co.uk

The excellent quality of this lens was apparent as soon as I unboxed it. Compared to the 18-55 kit lens this is a massive step up in terms of picture quality, and having an aperture of f2.8 across the full focal range is really great. Focusing is very fast and accurate.I'm probably not going to be able to use this for travel due to (1) weight and (2) size. That's not a criticism of the lens, just the reality of needing to travel light!

Probably the best cropped sensor Canon lens there is.

It's expensive but worth it for the f2.8 throughout aperture. This works really well in low light as a result. The optics quality are also better than the regular 18-55mm kit lens as you would expect.

Fantastic lens. It is very flexible and suits me for use on holidays. If you're going to carry just one lens around with you take this one. It isn't a lightweight though.

Great Shots but Sent it Back due to Lens Creep
Reviewed on Amazon.co.uk

Lovely lens, and great images... was being used for product photography daily. However, I was forced to send it back as I was experiencing lens creep under the weight of the lens when shooting downward on a subject (i.e. facing the ground). Ended up going for a similar lens in the Sigma range.. half the price, have been using it for over a year now with no problems.

A great lens for the price.

Mostly a great lens. It fits my camera (Canon 750D) well and is a significant improvement on the kit lens it came with. It's not as sharp as I thought it would be in certain settings but once you know its traits it performs beautifully. A great lens for the price.

Don't buy second hand
Reviewed on Amazon.co.uk

A fantastic general purpose lens. A word of warning if you decide to purchase this lens second hand in the market place. I bought a second hand one on Amazon market place and it stopped working correctly after 2 days, unfortunately I was on holiday in New Zealand by then. Amazon were great, though. They extended the return period until I got home. Was refunded within a couple of days and bought the lens new.

Fantastic lens. For the price, you'd think it's an L series, but to be honest, it practically is. It's very sharp, bright, great colour reproduction. If there are any distortions, I can't see them as the camera is taking care of them automatically. Note: it's not light!

Absolutely Amazing!

Stunning quality lens. Bought to replace a non-Canon lens for use on a EOS 50D. Whatever reviews you read of this lens, it tells you it is a good one. Perfectly sharp images and if it wasn't an EF-S fitting, it would have a red ring around the front and be even more expensive. It is an expensive lens, but you get what you pay for. Very pleased

Not cheap but when you see the quality you will realise why.

A constant 1:2.8 throughout the range allows low light operation and gives a fantastic short depth of field when required. This lens is very sharp and is producing some stunning photographs.I was concerned before purchase that I would miss the extra zoom of my previous 'walk about' 17-85 lens but in practice you can't notice the difference unless you do a back to back comparrison. This is a great go-to lens and will rarely be of my camera from now on.

Use this Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Zoom Lens with large aperture of f/2.8 for select Canon Digital SLR cameras.

This specially designed circular aperture produces a shallow depth of field, which creates background blur, drawing attention to the desired subject.

There are 2 ultra-low dispersion (UD) glass elements in order to deliver impressive image quality throughout the entire zoom range, with 2 spherical lens elements ensuring high contrast from one corner or the frame to the other.

An image stabiliser lens group shift to compensate for camera movement, so image appears steady on the image plane.

With the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Zoom Lens autofocus can be achieved quickly and quietly as well as full-time mechanical manual focusing.

Product Description

The Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens is a large-aperture lens specifically designed for EF-S type digital SLR cameras, and that offers a super wide angle to short telephoto zoom range, with built-in Image Stabilization. The focal length is equivalent to approx. 27-88mm in 35mm format.
This lens features Canon's latest optical Image Stabilizer technology, providing up to 3-stop compensation for image blur caused by camera shake and slow shutter speeds. This ensures clear, crisp images, even in dim light.
Designed specifically for digital photography, the lens has specially shaped lens elements and Super Spectra coatings to suppress ghosting and flare, which can be caused by reflections off digital camera sensors.
Note: Only Canon Extension Tube EF 25 II and 12 II fit on this lens.
Note! Not suitable for 35mm film SLR cameras or digital camera with image sensor bigger than APS-C size. Only fits on the EOS Digital Rebel series, or 20D, 30D, 40D, 50D, 60D, and 7D SLR cameras.

Manufacturer's Description

Zoom lenses are very convenient. The equivalent of two or more fixed focal length lenses in one unit. The maximum aperture of some zoom lenses changes as you alter the focal length, but through-the-lens (TTL) metering takes this into account to give correct exposure.

To meet user demands for a fast EF-S zoom lens, Canon has specially designed a lens with a large aperture of f/2.8 for select Canon Digital SLR cameras. The large circular aperture produces a shallow depth-of-field, creating background blur that draws attention to the photographic subject.

The lens construction includes UD and aspherical elements, which deliver impressive image quality throughout the entire zoom range. Image Stabilizer lens groups shift to compensate for camera movement so that the image appears steady on the image plane, ensuring clear, crisp images, even in dim light.

With a Ring-type USM, inner focusing and innovative AF algorithms, this lens achieves autofocus quickly and quietly, and with full-time mechanical manual focusing, manually adjusting the focus is possible even in AF mode.
