I bought this lens for its quality glass and wide aperture to use for portrait photos. First tried it on my EOS 6D Mk1 and it worked fine but relies on very good eyesight (even with dioptre set to my prescription) to get pin sharp images. The focus ring has decent resistance and 130 degree travel so that is good. One can of course switch to electronic screen, zoom in to get focus pin sharp then zoom back out and take the photo but it's too much hassle in a real-world environment. Yes I can get a acceptable focus using my eye through the viewfinder but it's not as reliable as the other method. So I tried it on my mirrorless Canon M50 which has focus peaking through the EVF and screen. The results are AMAZING as using this method I get spot-on focus every time - pin-sharp images. NOTE: to use a 'vintage' manual lens on a mirrorless like the M50 one has to go into settings/custom functions and enable the 'release shutter without lens' or it won't fire as it thinks no lens is attached (due to the absence of electronic communication between lens & camera) I love this lens and am delighted with results - it's exceptional value for money and very high quality build & glass. Best setting I find is F2.0 or 2.8 as 1.4 at 85mm is very shallow DOF (eyes in focus, ears not!)
Postie40Compact, well built, balances well on canon Eos-r body, where the the peaking makes it easy to focus. The bokeh is exceptionally nice and creamy!
HJSP8The best Samsung lens
LinkyI bought this lens for its Bokeh qualities, it is a super fast lens at an affordable price.Money well spent .
Ray SGreat lens. Really sharp even at f1.4 this sharpness improves a little when stopped down to f2. The manual focus is not a problem as I have been using manual focus lenses for many years. Very happy with my purchase.
StevenBThe focus distance, you have to get use to the distance between the camera and the subject and adjust yourself accordingly to get a sharp image.
Amazon CustomerThis is nonautofocused lencs. But working very easily.
Eszter Halasibuy it if your after and good value for money portrait lens Im happy with mine give it a try
Amazon CustomerThis lens is a gem and amazing for portraits . Can not recommend enough. Dont be put off by manual focus . Well happy with this little beauty and a must for any photographer
Pablo HollyManual focus, but very easy to focus due to the long throw and it's sharpness, even wide open. Excellent for portraits.Downside is either due to the aperture or coating, CA appears in high contrast areas. This is however incredibly easy to remove in LR.

A great quality, solid build, manual focus lens, the perfect budget choice for portrait photography, love it! Only downside is no AF but that doesn't matter if you aren't lazy????
Amazon CustomerQuality glass with pin sharp pictures.Takes a lot of hit and miss practice at f1.4 focusing
Burt 1959A beautiful lens and a joy to use.
TrevorMI'm sure I've reviewed this before. This is used on my Sony A77. The pictures are stunning and 1.4 it is very fast with great bokeh. It is a manual focus lens but I love manual focus so it suits me. As my pro snapper friend said it's the best 85mm manual lens he has used. It is what you wouls call "engineered" it's heavy, beautiful and made incredibly well. If it was auto focus it would cost at least £1,200 in my opinion.
Chris J. LloydAs usual, top optical quality from Samyang. I own the 12mm, 35mm, 50mm & 85mm and can say that I like them much better than my Canon 135mm f2 or 16-35 f4. None of the Samyang lenses have autofocus, and to me this is an advantage as it makes me a better photographer. In the old days all lenses were manual, there was no Photoshop and yet legendary images were produced. I am using it with Magic Lantern focus peaking which makes manual focusing quick and accurate.

It changed my view to photography, an excellent lense. Downside its manual and once you are aware of it, you are on the ball
DonThe 85mm f/1.4 IF MC Aspherical Lens by Samyang is an ideal portrait lens. The f/1.4 aperture allows a great deal of light in, and its focal length is perfect for capturing undistorted facial features. Each lens within its system has a multi-layered, anti-reflective coating which reduces reflections of light on the lens surface, and the internal focusing system provides smooth, grab-free manual focusing, which is also conducive to assured portrait photography. An iris diaphragm design helps to produce excellent bokeh, the slightly blurred, out-of-focus background that is a desired component of quality portraiture. Another budget-friendly, quality lens by Samyang.
This lens includes a special chip that allows the lens to work with your Nikon camera's focus confirm, auto exposure, auto metering and auto white balance functions
