Makes a nice home coffee roaster

Bought this specifically for roasting coffee and it works quite well. I've added a chaff catcher to the top as the stuff goes everywhere otherwise!

Not the greatest popcorn maker / coffee roast. I'd avoid.
Reviewed on Amazon.co.uk

I use it for both popcorn and roasting coffee...Popcorn: as a few less-than-5-star reviews have hinted, it will expel unpopped kernels with the popped ones, so I can never get a full helping of popcorn. It's annoying, and once I wait a few minutes for the unpopped kernels to cool down, I can generally put them back in for another round, and a third, but I probably shouldn't need to do this.Coffee:The Good:- It roasts coffee! The Bad:- you can only roast a really small amount of beans, otherwise the popcorn maker will get full, and impede itself.- it spews the chaff EVERYWHERE. Nope, it won't be caught in the bowl- the plastic top melts. I'm not using the popcorn maker for longer than 5-10 minutes for each small batch of coffee, but the top probably shouldn't look like the one in the picture attached. It's the winter here, so ambient temperature is about 17C.All in all, you can probably do better than this machine for either popping corn, or roasting coffee.

Kenco coffeee can extension

Well I hope I love it for roasting coffee. Some one else had an amazon order so they bought it to save on postage costs. Thought this photo might interest people. The can I used isn't too bad a fit around the metal container in it as well. I thought I would try it like this first as a Mk1. I did wonder about attaching directly to the metal container in it but this is spring loaded and held down by the top part. The can used doesn't weigh enough to keep it fully down. Also suspect it will be handy to be able to remove the can initially to stir the beans around. ;-) It's not bad for freeze dried coffee.Have done my first roast. Not bad most 2nd crack and a few just first. Had to stir the beans initially to keep them moving. Around 75gm as held in the scoop that comes with it. After a few 2nd cracks I switched off and stirred the beans which resulted in more 2nd cracks. I may try doing the same thing on the first crack and the switching it on again. Not the right thing to do according to web law but I suspect that it will help to obtain a more even roast as the beans retain the heat for some time.

It does make excellent coffee but your mileage may vary
Reviewed on Amazon.co.uk

Never used it for making popcorn, as I suspect many buyers will say. It does make excellent coffee but your mileage may vary. Not as fun as the heat gun method but usually a more even roast is obtained. One tip for prospective purchasers is to be aware that as the beans become lighter during the roast they will leap higher and occasionally fall out of the basket and out the front. The easy way to stop this is to put a small block or other object under the front so that it is leaning backwards. Then, as the beans are thrown out the top they hit the plastic shroud and fall back in again. Simple! Can't recommend this enough but for fun buy this AND the Apollo 2000W Dual High Low Temperature heat gun and a stainless steel bowl. The two complement each other well.

excellent for roasting coffee on the cheap
Reviewed on Amazon.co.uk

Good for coffee roasting. More even roasting than with heat gun and dog bowl..Ambient temp plays a big part, so if like me you want to do it outside, do it in a box. Couldn't get to first crack without the box when outside. With box.... about 8 mins to second crack with 120 g of Brazilian Santos..Also get rid of the top clear plastic bit and make an extension as the beans will dance around and fly out later in the roast..For anyone doubting if it's worth it, it is! I haven't drunk coffee from a chain cafe in ages, roast your own and you'll know..

If you use it to popcorn is s***. everything jumps out of the machine and you have to keep feeding the machine with un popped corns. And they burn..... a lot. However if you use it to roast coffee it's great (for the price) fast and it gives a reasonable even roast.

Use it for roasting coffee beans, melts the lid as to be expected but works really well, time consuming as only a small quantity each time. Don;t bother using it for popcorn as its much easier just to do it in a pan.

great for coffee beans.
Reviewed on Amazon.co.uk

I bought this for roasting coffee beans. It works a treat. Don't try it with more than 50 grms of beans at a time - some will escape! Takes 7 - 10 minutes. Cheap enough to replace if it burns out, but I've been using it for about a year without problems (although the plastic top has distorted a bit with the heat)Update - 3 years on, still going strong! I regularly roast 250g in 5 batches of 50g, one after the other. First batch takes up to 9 minutes, with the subsequent batches in the already hot machine ready in 6 or 7 minutes. Cool the beans quickly in a metal sieve using a hand held fan, and leave for at least 24 hours before use. I grind the beans in an old Spong grinder and make coffee in a stovetop Italian style pot (stainless steel, not aluminium). Best coffee for miles.

Great for roasting coffee
Reviewed on Amazon.co.uk

I bought this popcorn maker to roast coffee with and it works perfectly. I had a cheaper one previously which would overheat and turn off just before first crack but this does not have that issue. I would definitely reccomend this if you are looking to get in to coffee roasting without shelling out for a proper roaster and I'm sure it pops excellent popcorn too.

But does it roast coffee?
Reviewed on Amazon.co.uk

Never used this as a popcorn maker, but I have roasted plenty of coffee in it, which is good fun, if a little haphazard and messy. I think I made a fan cut out or ran at half speed or similar - certainly beans stopped blowing around as much, and roasted much, much faster after the first use. After that fan started working again, roast times went way up, or, on a cold day, it stopped getting hot enough. (I roast outside.)Does it roast coffee to an acceptable level? I think so, and I've made some decent tasting coffee this way.
