I’ve reviewed a few irons for Amazon over the past few years, varying on the price spectrum from affordable to pricey. Regardless of your budget, I have found it’s definitely a case of getting what you pay for, but also to be wary of the label. For example, you can pop into your local Wilko and literally buy a steam iron for less than a fiver… but although it works ok, it doesn’t set any records and took an age to get any creases out. Another example: I revewed a Brabantia iron for Amazon Vine which retailed around £30 and it was pretty fair but over-priced (a case of paying for the name). This Philips model sits comfortably in the low-end of high-priced irons (anything around £100 and upwards).Firstly, bring a model with a separate tank, the mains power cord connects to the tank and then through the handheld iron itself. The cord from plug to tank isn’t the most generous, so you will need to be positioned somewhat near the wall. (Use an extension if you want to be in the middle of your room.) With that said, the cord from tank to iron is more than enough, so you can position it at the end of your ironing board (if it’s sturdy enough) or on a nearby sideboard.Secondly, when in use it actually gives of a good amount of steam with a strong amount of pressure. You won’t be ironing through denim jeans in 30 seconds, but you will get through them fairly swiftly. You will glide through your shirts and tees, and anything lightweight. However it should be a little more smooth with its glide... I’d expect better for this type of model... but I wonder if that is to with the lack of weight in the iron itself.(On that note, it’s scratch-resistant surface of the iron appears to work a treat, having deliberately run it over zippers and brasswear on my denim, it been unaffected.)The function of all buttons were easy to use. The tank is permanently connected to the iron, but filing with water is an easy task regardless. for inserting water is quite generous for sitting under a tap, and the reservoir is easy to view and gauge how

Does not glide as well as other Philips steam generators
Reviewed on Amazon.co.uk

Philips make some absolutely fantastic Steam Generator irons that can really cut down ironing time and give a better finish. However this isn't one of them.Things I'm happy with:The 1.2L capacity and slightly lower specification of this entry-level Philips steam generator means it's quite manageable and doesn't need a vast amount of storage space. This is a real plus in my book, as some of these steam generators take up a lot of room. Though the water reservoir isn't detatchable, (which seems to be an increasingly common feature on Philips steam generators), filling is straightforward and not awkward. A detatchable tank would be more convenient, but I'd say it's a corner worth cutting if costs have to be pared down. Cable storage is a velcro tie for the mains cable, and storage space in the base unit for the steam hose. It all stows away without any bother. There's a steam trap for the de-calcification process, so de-calcifying your Philips steam generator no longer requires filters, like some older models. There is a heat adjustment setting, which was a bit of a surprise, but it's a nice addition. Steam output is plentiful and without annoying drops of water.Things I think need sorting out:Put bluntly the claim that the "Ceramic soleplate is scratch resistant, glides well and easy to clean." raises expectations the GC6612/30 fails to meet. I don't know about scratch resistance, but being easy to clean is no good if it doesn't glide well, and sadly, the GC6612/30 I have does not glide well when compared with other steam generators in the Philips range. Unfortunately, this makes the GC6612/30 much more of a chore to use than other Philips steam generators, and even at the entry-level price, I can't recommend this model as it doesn't glide over clothes as other models do.It would be great to be able to advise you not to waste your money on more expensive models in the Philips range and buy this bargain-priced model, but I can't. Steam delivery is excellent, but it just doesn't glide over clothes as it should. Don't

Do not buy. Worst iron I've ever encountered. Anywhere. Ever!
Reviewed on Amazon.co.uk

After using my Mum's Philips Steam Generator, I had high hopes for this, however it's the WORST IRON I'VE EVER USED! You could almost call it the anti-iron. It drags the fabric ironing creases in and ripping and burning the material, even on the lowest heat/steam setting. There is plenty of steam in the upright position and nothing when it's horizontal and you're trying to iron. Awful. Dreadful. It's going back. I'll spend the extra money on the intelligent temperature version which is amazing. DO NOT BUY!
