The best Camera Ever
Reviewed on Amazon.co.uk

I really can't understand why Sony are discontinuing this camera, I know the newer models have more megapixels but more is not always better, and even so they could bring out new models and still continue to produce this one. If you want a camera that is idiot proof and takes great photo's especially in low light conditions and has a HD video recorder that will give a camcorder a run for it's money then this is the camera you want to try and get hold of. I only take photo's as a hobby I like to display them on my pc and I use some of them for greetings cards so i want good looking pictures without having to learn how to use different lenses and filters etc. This camera is a dream come true and believe me I've gone through a few for someone who just takes photo's for fun.

I was expecting a lot from this camera, having read the CNET and other expert reviews, so it was going to be difficult for it to impress me. Overall (and so far) I am impressed though. Picture quality is very good - not as good as my DSLR but far better then my previous Casio Exilim compact.I've only used the camera a couple of times as yet but the most immediately noticeable improvement is the quality of pictures in lower light conditions - noticably better images taken inside, without a flash and outdoors in overcast conditions, where my old Casio would have given me blurry pictures. The second noticeable improvement for me was the superior quality of video footage, though I'll need to test this out further using HD TV rather than my laptop.A third improvement on my older Casio technology is the number of clever features available to improve the end results and give a bit more user control, which if they work (and others seem to endorse most of them) will hopefully ensure fewer wasted shots and disk space. The camera is quick to boot up and very logically organised in terms of controls (I have no problem with the recessed on/off button). The wide panorama mode seems to work well, though how best to display these wide images I'm not sure yet) but I couldn't comment on the 3D, which is really surplus to requirement, as far as I'm concerned. One unexpected bonus for me was the software that comes with it - very easy to use and quite powerful in terms of editing and organising pictures and movie clips (I have purchased software in the past, which hasn't been nearly as good as this). If I was being critical (only having used it a couple of times), it's 'fatter' than my old Casio, so a bit bulkier in the pocket (though overall it is very small and light weight). The one or two flash aided shots I took seem as thought the flash is a bit powerful close up (or doesn't discriminate distance). Focusing is as good as my old Casio but not as good as my DSLR and one or two shots seem to have been taken slightly out of focus (perh

A sturdy camera with some negatives and some positives
Reviewed on Amazon.co.uk

After taking 5000+ photo's in all 4 seasons, here is my review.Nice camera with a few positives and a few negatives. Positives are:-> Nice panoramic photo capability.-> Lightweight.-> Optical stabiliser works very well.-> Solid design of camera body. Feels like it will survive a long time.-> Wide angle lense is brilliant.-> Vivid colours in sunny conditions (especially a blue sky).-> Very high quality HD video (approx 7GB space required per hour or 120MB per minute).-> Variable digital onscreen markers help you to get focus on correct area's and to get photo straight/central.-> The camera sensor is very good. Every pixel seemed to count when taking photos that required many small details (e.g the figurines on a cathedral, etc).Negatives are:-> Camera generally struggles with scenes where there are varying light levels (e.g inside a room with light coming through the window). The bright parts of the picture are over saturated with no detail.-> Overpowering flash. Makes things look too bright in my opinion. The flash also activated when I least expected it to. The flash came on in relatively bright outdoor shots.-> The camera sometimes struggles to get correct focus (when the flash is required) if there are any bright lights in the area where the photo is being taken.-> Seems to be virtually no jpeg compression. You can take a virtually black photo and the picture will still be 3MB+. Then you take it home and save it in applications like paint-shop-pro and get a file size of 500k.-> Lack of digital zoom.-> Camera struggled on pictures which contained bright white snow and dark greens. The picture looked black and white.-> Generally the camera seemed to work much better in bright conditions. In gloomy weather the pictures were not as sharp or contain as much detail.-> I found (before taking a photo) I had to point at things for several seconds before the camera finally settled on a reasonable automatically selected camera setting. I couldn't simply point and shoot quickly and expect a good photo. This is not a major

has it's pros and cons
Reviewed on Amazon.co.uk

Purchased this camera since it was on an offer and I needed an update from my now near 6 years old cybershot. It's a significant improvement from my old camera, but i cant help but feel it is far from perfect:- This camera hits one bar on its battery life in less than an hour of continuous use :(- 'Auto-rotate' of photos only rotates for display on the camera (pointless) and not the actual files, so I 'still' need to rotate them myself once loaded onto the PC. Thankfully, can turn this off.- Panoramic sweep is a nice feature, but a bit hit and miss with its results.- Background defocus is a nice feature, but is also hit and miss with its results. Lack of manual focus point.- 3D photos i am unable to view, so cant really comment. But seeing there is glasses-less 3D technology now, it would have been nice to see this sort of tech on a camera offering 3D photos.- Lack of full manual control.- Long waiting period between photos when using any of the special features. But On the plus side:+ Excellent quality in low light and good image stabilisation.+ 10 photos a second burst is a nice touch,+ Videos are excellent. Only been recording in the lowest quality setting and the results are still great.Overall, there are better cameras out there, but this wont let you down - until the battery dies.

Handy little camcorder!

The WX5 was launched in late 2010 and comes loaded with the latest tech, some very smart features and also a few not-so-useful gimmicky modes. Physically, this camera is a very nice size, a decent weight - light enough to carry around all day long but not so light it feels cheap or is unstable to hold. It is well sculpted in metal with round corners and high resolution LCD screen on the back.Having owned a long line of Fuji F-series cameras and also a previous Sony T500, there are many things about the WX5 that I appreciate. For a point-and-shooter this camera is ideal. It has a very impressive 'intelligent' auto mode which works very well and is quite fast, selecting the right scene mode most of the time. The face detection and smile detection features work reliably too.The stand-out feature of this camera for me, and the reason I upgraded to it from the T500, is its High Definition 1080i video mode. The quality is jaw-dropping, especially at the full 17mbit AVCHD mode. The wide-angle lens, new CMOS sensor and relatively large aperture lets you capture impressively low-noise footage even indoors. You can shoot 29mins of video per clip. HD movies on compact cameras have really come a long way.Coupled with Sony's steadyshot Optical Image Stablisation, continuous autofocus and ability to zoom during recording, it really does rival HD footage from many dedicated camcorders costing twice the price. The fact it has a 24mm wide angle lens means you can capture more in a scene than any current consumer camcorder. I've found filming with the wx5 lets me achieve very natural 'real' footage as people and kids are usually not aware you're shooting video. Whip out the camcorder and everyone is either suddenly shy or unconsciously putting on a show. The camera has a built-in mini HDMI port so you can connect directly to your TV and play the movies without a computer. Mini HDMI cable is not included but costs about £2.50 from Amazon traders or auction sites. The weak side to the wx5's video mode is the audio recording. Unfortun

I really didnt know what camera to get; there are just so many new models. The online reviews of the cameras all seemed to contradict the other reviews, so they only confused the issue further.Technically, the WX5 is ahead of many other compacts; on paper anyway. So thats nice.In the end I just went to the shops and looked at the different models I was considering. The WX5 is much more compact than the others, so it was the choice for me; I actually might carry it with me, rather than just owning it!The bad thing about this camera is the battery life. It isnt good. I have turned off the eyefi function; dont know if that helps. I guess the intelligent modes, where the camera takes multiple shots to make one picture, might really drain the camera, but thats an option you dont have to use. However, the pictures seem great. You just do not need a flash; at least I havent used it. Christmas eve in a darkened pub, and all the pictures came out great without flash. I guess not using the flash will level the battery playing field relative to a compact where the flash is needed. Anyway, you can probably take a couple of hundred good shots before needing a battery change/charge; and those shots will probably be good. The panorama mode is quite amazing. A panorama of a darkened pub, with everyone moving around, and the shot is great! The background blur function is hit and miss. But its very good when it does work.Smile detector works well; and so, necessarily, does the face detector. The 3D mode is interesting, but thats it really. This camera is not difficult to use. If you cant find a scene mode suitable, default to ISO mode, or just use the auto mode.It only has 5x zoom, but if you reduce the resolution to 5mega pixels, you can have a zoom of nearly 8 without affecting the image quality; unlike digital zoom, which does affect image quality. I personally always have it set on 5mega, otherwise the files are unnecessarily bigger. The 5 star rating is because I now have an easy to use very compact camera that takes great photos t

A little too smart for its own good...
Reviewed on Amazon.co.uk

Coming from a DSC-N2 this camera tends to be a little annoying in that it tries too darn hard to be smart!I have found it virtually impossible to take two pictures in a row and get the same result, tilt the camera just a little whereby the light changes however subtle and you will find yourself with two entirely differente exposures.Picture quality however is absolutely stunning, and the camera's abillity to take panoramic shots is gorgeous. At first I missed the touch screen interface of the DSC-N2 but have got used to the wheel/button interface of the DSCWX5 pretty fast, however a minor pain point I found was that to review pictures the camera always has to open/extend its lense, there is no way to jump into Playback without it.
