It’s a very good lens, especially considering how little it costs - you get a bit more than your money’s worth. It doesn’t give quite such good results as my Sony 35mm f1.8 prime, but it isn’t far off. Having already had a manual focus zoom lens, I was a bit worried about being able to focus quickly enough to get any decent shots, but the lack of zoom makes focussing easier, as does my on-camera focussing assistance, and so long as I’m not trying to focus on anything particularly fast moving, it’s fine. The longer length gives a different perspective effect for portraits etc than I get with the 35mm/1.8, so that’s nice. I’m mostly just holding back that 1 star because of the manual focus.
Daz CWorks a treat, really good at 1.8, excellent a few stops up, a quality portrait lens.
Jonathan M.I've tried it on a Nikon D750 and it's absolute worth the money if you you have no problems with manual settings. Great for portrait and outdoor. The only thing I don't like is that the lens hood is screwed on the lens and the lens cap has the radius of the lens hood. So if you want to use it without the lens hood you need to get a cap for the size of the lens, but this is not a big issue.
Markus H.Bit fiddly but a good little buy to keep in you bag. Nice images though.
Amazon CustomerThis is an initial review. I tested the lens on a Nikon D60, and I purchased the item knowing that the D60 would not meter using the lens. I have only be able to test indoors and therefore has to use a Metz Mecablitz 36 C-2 flash (a great flash for shooting with old glass if the camera doesn't support TTL with old manual focus lenses), and in order to get the subject nicely in focus was stopped down to f4, but the pictures where reasonable and the lens is certainly worth the price when compared to old 85mm lens you can use on the Nikon D60 where you would expect to spend in excess of £200.
Mr. Juan-manuel VidalIt's actually sharper than my kit lens if you get the manual focus bang on!
So cheap but amazing quality for its price!
Recommend to use minimum f2.5 for better sharpness but 1.8 is still reasonably sharp

James L.Can for the US so took forever. Not as good as it should be although very cheap.
EuroGamerThe lens worked ok but was stiff to turn the focus ring at one end and it would stick, its the adaptor that is the let down it had a lot of play in it and was a pain with the stiff focus ring.
Gareth JonesSo far, so good. Only had this lens for 24 hours and will update if needed. Images are sharp, the Depth of field is amazing. and for the price it's an absolute bargain! It's also very well built!
Amazon CustomerGreat product, sharp pictures
MariusSuperb glass for twice the money !!!
E DI VITOWow, talk about a hidden jewel. i bought this from another supplier to use on my d750, and the results are amazing. i have captured some of my best images at weddings using this lens. the out of focus area is amazing, the sharpness unreal. It can be difficult to find focus, however, using your live view and zooming to confirm will produce images that has you scratching your head, wondering why you paid 1200 for the nikon or canon high end version. I use this only on a tripod, using a magnification add on to the camera and get amazing results..I really cannot recommend this lens enough for the patient photographer, with a love for manual lens.Video people, you cannot be without this.
conorconanThis is a manual lens. It works on both "full frame" cameras as well as the "APS-C" style digital SLR cameras. You can only use the lens in "M" manual exposure mode.
A highly practical medium telephoto lens with superb delineation and portability, the Opteka 85mm lens produces sharp and clear images at all apertures. Employing a re-designed optical system that includes Opteka's exclusive HD super multi coating, the 85mm f/1.8 inherits its predecessor’s ultra-fast f/1.8 maximum aperture and rounded six-blade diaphragm for superior depth-of-field control and background blur (bokeh). Engineered to inspire new levels of creativity and artistry, the Opteka 85mm f/1.8 will unleash the full potential of your digital camera in the studio or in the field. And because the front lens group does not rotate during focusing, special filter effects are not affected. Best of all, the standard zoom lens with its natural angle of view and perspective, captures the subject plainly, making it excellent for portraits and images that require a natural depth of field.
One of the advantages of the Opteka 85mm is its build quality. The materials are glass and metal, there is no plastic used in this lens. It deliberately does not contain any electronics. It is 100% manual. The less parts it has, the less chances that something will break down.
Due to this lens only being produced in a Canon EOS or Nikon mount, a EOS to Sony E adapter is included. This all-metal adapter allows you to attach any manual-focus Canon lens to your Sony E-mount camera.
