This is an adequate all-rounder lens so far. It's good for portraits and scenery. The zoom range will be adept for most situations. It is light weight and not too long. The auto focus is quick, sometimes too quick when you are prepared to be more patient to get the sharpest portrait. I've not used it extensively or for long enough as I bought it recently. However, I've been trying out a number of lenses including Samyang 30mm, Canon 50 mm, and the Sony 28mm on my Sony A7 ii. At this time, this lens seems to be the most versatile and the one I'm most likely to carry. It's early days, and I'll update this review when I've used the lens for longer and taken many more pics. In terms of value for money, I don't think it should be priced more than £250 when new. There's nothing exceptional about the lens but it seems to be suitable enough for general use.
Discerning shopperThis lens has replaced my 50mm kit lens and will be my most used lens. Versatile zoom range.
GeorgiaI already have the 70 to 300 Sony FE lens. This 28 to 70 lens now gives me the full range. It is fairly compact so easy to carry. Picture quality is excellent at 42 mega pixels.

Pretty good results, a credible performance. One can be unreal with pixel peeping and other quality parameters which do not correspond to the overall impact of an image. Perhaps it does not produce a razor sharp image across the entire lens at all apertures and focal lengths but the lens is good enough for the full frame sensor, is lightweight, and ideal for quality travel photography. No one who sees my pictures including professional photographers has complained about the results!
DiskdocI bought this as an emergency addition to the kit for a job. I had to fly with my gear, and didn't want the heft of my Nikon kit, so dug out my pair of Sony A7 bodies. I didn't use the 28 - 70 as much as I'd expected to, because a) the several vintage manual Olympus lenses I had with me were a delight to use and were giving me the results I wanted. And b) I had never used the A7 bodies with autofocus lenses, and I confess to being shocked by the slowness of the autofocus system, even in the blistering light of the high summer day I was using them. For the money, and for a kit lens, the SEL2870 turned in a creditable performance, stopped down. The in-lens stabilisation wasn't useful to me, as I have a very, very steady hand, which often fights stabilisation systems, no matter which manufacturer's system I'm using. I think this lens would be a great solution for undemanding shooting on a budget.
Barney B.I hoped for better results, but for landscapes I find this lens lacking colours and contrast and for weddings too dim with its f3.5 aperture. It is light and smaller than the other FE lenses so I do use it but have soon desired to get the zeiss lens to replace it
BUTTONSo far I love it. It appears sharp though rather large sitting on my Sony A6000. It gives 42.5mm to 105 (full frame equivalent) on my dslr equivalent Sony, which is a handy range for many occasions. It has stabilisation also. Overall, quite pleased so far.LATER: The more I use it the more I like it. It is very sharp and focuses quite close. Not certain whether this level of performance would be applicable to full frame? On my Sony A6000 and with practice, it has become rather useful. It is not a do everything lens if such a thing exists. I have three others to fit this camera; 20mm pancake, 10-18 zoom and 50 f1.8; all of which I can heartily recommend as an ex-pro.

Excellent lens for the money
Audrey BackDESIGNED FOR THE ALPHA 7,BUT I USE IT ON THE SMALLER SENSOR NEX 7. SO FAR I CAN ONLY DESCRIBE IT AS STUNNING. MY LANDSCAPE PHOTOS ARE SUPERB.
GLEN MCIFFERA relatively lightweight , bright lens which makes a very good partner for the Sony Alpha 7 Mk2. Silent and quick in operation.
