Difficult to focus
Reviewed on Amazon.co.uk

When I can get it in focus it’s a great lens. But too often I miss the focus - maybe its user error - though it seems sharp in the viewfinder, which ruins the shot. Has potential for great shots

Awesome on my Z6
Reviewed on Amazon.co.uk

I received yesterday a brand new Nikon 50mm 1.2 and a dumb adapter. Took it out today in NYC on my Z6 to test drive it. I was really scared that I paid more than the price of an S50mm 1.8 and that I would end up regretting my purchase. I have to admit that getting used to the extremely shallow DOF at 1.2 was challenging, still have a lot to get used to, however, I am so happy I opted for this lens, while I am sure that optically it’s not anywhere near the new Z mount 50mm, but the fun factor and the artistic factor is way up there. There’s something special about an old tank like this 50mm, that’s manual focus and that makes you take some time to think about each shot.

Play with this lense on a relaxing photo shooting

One of the best lenses I have, I always try to use it for fun, for serious events like weddings is not recomendable because is not autofocus and you can lost a lot of moments. Also never use it at 1.2, try it from 2.0

Outstanding piece of art

What an outstanding lens! It's a joy to photograph with this piece of art. Build quality is amazing and fantastic zoom ring, precise without being too much long compared to zeiss plannar 50mm.

A beautiful lens.
Reviewed on Amazon.co.uk

A beautiful lens...dreamy effect and wonderful stolen moments when you get it right. That said, the depth of field is so small it's hard to nail even with the focus assist. Don't shoot moving things and plan what you want to shoot. Which is also to say shoot buildings, landscapes, or cooperative subjects. All that said I can't seem to take it off of my camera now that I have it (shoot d750).

Near perfect.
Reviewed on Amazon.co.uk

Wonderful lens, I use it more than any other right now. Built very, very well and I always get spectacular results. Absolutely love being able to open up to f/1.2. For anyone looking for wider aperture and a very well built lens without spending a load of money, this is pretty much a steal lol. One and only issue I have with it is slightly sub-par saturation in low light (though this may just be an issue with my camera, I doubt it's the lens). Pretty much as close to perfect as you can get for such a good price

I got this lens partially to better my manual focusing skills and partially for the f1.2. I'm using a Nikon D800E. The 1.2 is fun but I have to say it seems like the sweet spot for this lens is f2.0 where the bokeh is amazing but the subject is tack sharp. I've got a range of AF-S lenses but this one has become my favorite just for everyday shooting.

A Very Interesting Lens
Reviewed on Amazon.co.uk

This is a bit of a quirky lens, in a good way...in that if you learn to get a feel for what it does (and doesn't do), you will get some great results. It's absolutely NOT a lens that produces consistent results through its aperture range. One shot at f/1.2 and you'll see what I mean. When shooting wide open with this lens, you get heavy vignetting, soft shapes and outlines, and very soft corners. These issues dissipate quickly, and by f/2 they are practically unnoticeable to the average viewer. If you're looking for a soft subject, in a sort of dreamy look, with soft, creamy bokeh behind you, then you may be able to work with this lens wide open and enjoy what it offers. If you enjoy adding some vignetting into your photos anyway, then that issue won't bother you so much...and you can always mitigate it in post. At f/1.2 depth of field is razor thin, so accurate focusing is paramount. If you can nail the focus and accurate place the depth of field where you want it on your subject, you could work some magic with this lens at its widest apertures. All that said, you can get good use out of this lens as an every-day, journalistic type lens at its medium apertures (i.e. f/4, f/5.6). It's image quality is all around best in this range, as the images are very sharp, there is no noticeable aberration or color fringing, and vignetting is gone. The corners remain sharp, and there is no light falloff as you go from center to corner. As is typical of Nikon quality, focusing is a pleasure. The focus ring turns with smooth ease, and if you prefer to focus and recompose, the focus ring will stay put where you leave it while you adjust the camera's placement. Given that it's a 50mm lens, its pretty small, but not the lightest 50mm out there...I'm assuming thats due to the extra glass needed to crank out f/1.2. Once you get used to how this lens responds at its different apertures, its surprising how flexible it is in what it can produce for you. This lens bears no resemblance to the performance of the famous Noct. Don't think that just because they both open up to f/1.2 that the results are similar...you'll be very disappointed. And, as I said before, if you expect this lens to shoot a standard image quality shot that the 50 1.4 will get you at 1.4, you will again be disappointed. This lens sets you up for a lot of work to be done at 1.2, but if you nail the shot, you will be rewarded with some unique imagery. This is a great lens for an experienced photographer who enjoys working with shallow depth of field and isolating subjects from a creamy bokeh background.

A solid metal low-light lens
Reviewed on Amazon.co.uk

I am not a photographer, but use these lenses for scientific imaging of a flat plate at minimal focal distance or even in macro. So the depth of field, Boceh and other artsy photo effects are of no interest to me - I just need the largest possible aperture to gather enough light together with a solid construction. This lens has both those properties, being solidly made in metal. I don't even use it on an SLR camera but on an amateur astronomer's CCD camera for which I use a custom coupler based on a macro extension tube set. There is a noticeable light gain in going from f/1.4 or more to f/1.2, so I am happy with this no-nonsense lens.

Old school quality and classic optical performance
Reviewed on Amazon.co.uk

Its so good that Nikon still makes these classic ais lenses. The build quality puts even the newer professional lenses to shame with lovely, solid metal body, engraved distance and aperture scales and a silky smooth focus helicoid. It is an absolute joy to use and is Nikon's fastest aperture lens.Optically it has a lovely natural slightly warm rendering typical of the ais family and is a wonderful creative tool with different apertures giving very different drawing styles.Wide open the image is rendered with high resolution but with lower contrast caused by spherical aberrations. This creates a softness and halation around the subject that illustrates technical imperfection but this is a wonderful drawing style for some subjects coupled with the razor thin depth of field.Stopped down to f1.4 rendering style changes slightly with a slight reduction in aberrations but there is a huge change at f2 that makes this aperture rather a sweet spot. The subject becomes razor sharp and falloff into blur is even more graceful. Focus shift does not seem to affect focus accuracy at this aperture.Stop down more and there is a significant focus shift at f2.8 but its not as straightforward as on some lenses and seems to be moderated by some field curvature perhaps. Its get sharper out to the corners by f4 and this and f5.6 give max global sharpness, where it easily matches more modern designs being crisp and with good contrast.I love this lens as it is loaded with character and is a pleasure to behold due to its wonderful acres of glass and build quality. Get one before they decide to stop making it! It truly is an artist's tool that enhances creative photography and to some degree slows down your photography into a thoughtful process.

My Favorite Fifty Prime on the 5D Mark II & Nikon FE
Reviewed on Amazon.co.uk

Silky smooth focusing, image quality, and superb build make this my go-to lens for 3/4 portraits, nature, and bokeh-licious shots on both my Canon DSLRs, Canon film camera, and Nikon 35mm film camera. Pros: * Much smoother manual focusing than the newer Canon EF or Nikon 50mm AF lenses * Closer focusing distance and more compact than the Nikon 50mm 1.2 AiS (about 18 in vs. 20 in) * Super-sharp from f/2.8-f/9.5 (DxO resolution with the 5D mark II is 15 perceptual megapixel, as high as any other lens on this camera) * Very good flare-resistance Cons: * Mild "condom-ring" bokeh with specular highlight sources (like christmas lights); better than the Nikkor 50mm 1.2, worse than the more bokeh-friendly Sigma 50mm 1.4 and Canon EF-II 50mm 1.8 * Mild chromatic fringing wide open with DSLRs (almost zero on 35mm print film) * Very shallow depth-of-field wide open requires careful focusing (I use Live View or the Eg-S precision-matte interchangeable screen on the 5D MkII); not a problem on legacy pre-1982 ground glass screens (e.g., Nikon FM & FE) * If you intend to use this on a Canon DSLR or 35mm film body, know that most of the Nikon-to-CanonEF adapters have an annoying bit of "play" to them. I haven't yet found a brand that is truly rock-solid For those who love a silky-smooth-focusing manual-focus lens with superb color, contrast, and resolution, highly recommended.

A Superb Lens
Reviewed on Amazon.co.uk

I bought this lens to use on my D700. While it is quite small it is also surprisingly heavy, giving it a solid, quality feel. It is quite easy to achieve sharp focus down to f2 but a bit trickier at f1.2 and f1.4; I find I can get good results just judging it by eye and not needing the focus confirmation dots, although I suspect it would be a lot harder to focus on a cropped sensor camera and I'm not sure I would recommend this lens for users of cropped sensor cameras. The lens is very versatile - it has a lovely soft look to the images at f1.2, but is bitingly sharp at f2. There is quite a bit of vignetting at these apertures but I like that look.I know I am still in the honeymoon period with this lens but it is rarely off my camera, it's quality build make it a joy to hold and to use, it gives great results and is very versatile. Getting back into the way of manual focusing took a little bit of getting used to and I'm still not as quick as my auto focus lenses are but I don't miss auto focus when using this lens.Thoroughly recommended for users of full frame cameras.
