Perfect and bright lens.
Reviewed on Amazon.co.uk

Bought it to replace my kit lens in K70 and after some time this is the only lens I use. Very bright, provides focal lengths sufficient for street photography, very low distortion. Highly Recommend.

Great quality in terms of picture, but too prone to fungus. Loud auto focus, so not good to video.
Reviewed on Amazon.co.uk

Bought this lens to match up with my Canon EOS 60D, and it delivers in still image use.
I would give it 5 stars if it wasn't too prone to develop fungus in lens elements. It never got moist or wet, just regular use.
Other than that, it is a good piece of equipment, robust, reliable.
In my opinion being a no frills upgrade from standard 18-55 Canon lens (if you can cope with the above issue). If anyone may be interested, I'll share some pics of issue.

On my canon 70D focusing is very fast and has no problem tracking movig subjects. This lens is very sharp. I think even the equivalent Canon lens will it find it difficult to match even though it's twice the price. It is also lighter than the competition. The lens does make a noise when fousing but not much and in practice it's lost any surrounding noise.

Huge improvement over kit lens
Reviewed on Amazon.co.uk

I have a Pentax K-S2. I had been disappointed with the results with the kit lens and exchanged it for a used Pentax f2.8 20-40 from their top range. Although the results were better and the lens handled nicely I was still dissatisfied and decided to try a non-Pentax lens. What a difference this has made! The Tamron 17-50 is competitively priced but nevertheless operates very smoothly and feels well made.
So far as focusing is concerned, when used in live-view it is very accurate but slow. It is not so accurate when used through the viewfinder but then the Pentax f2.8 20-40 was worse and it may be more of an issue with the camera rather than the lenses. This factor has been improved using the camera's 'focus fine-tuning' feature more successfully with the Tamron than I managed with the Pentax lens.
I use Lightroom 5 for editing. With the original kit lens, editing started with a great degree of Clarity and then correcting colour aberation. With the second Pentax lens this was still the case but to a lesser degree. I have not needed to use either of these tools with the Tamron images which are really crisp. I have begun to enjoy my photography again because I can be confident that if images are not up to scratch then I can no longer blame the lens but can work to improve technique. The lens is not too heavy.
Four stars are there because 1. It would be better if the lens was weather resistant. 2. The focus motor is not silent and 3. The manual focus is achieved with very little rotation of the focusing ring. It goes from close focus to infinity in something less than a quarter turn which, despite the smooth action, makes fine adjustment rather difficult. I would recommend this lens.
The attached photos are an original and a heavy crop from the central area. Despite the enlargement of the crop the quality is still reasonable.

Superb Lens
Reviewed on Amazon.co.uk

Did a lot of research on this spec of lens. Was reluctant to pay full price for it as it has mixed reviews. However I got a used one from Amazon today for £120.00. Let me just say I would happily have paid full price. I use a Pentax K-3 and the results are just fantastic. Do not hesitate on this lens, you will not be disappointed. I have bought gear five times this price and they don't come close. For sure this will be my stock lens for most shoots.

Great Lens For The Money
Reviewed on Amazon.co.uk

The lens supplied with my Pentak K-R was not cutting the mustard or any other condiment for that matter and so I started reading reviews for a suitable replacement and Im glad that I went for this beauty.
First off the construction is good the lens feels solid and well put together, as others have said it is quite a heavy lens but after carrying it around for a few days and with a wide camara strap attatched to the camara I can say that the extra weigh is worth it for the images it delivers.
As to the pictures great very sharp throughout the range and beats the Pentax standard lens hands down that little extra at the 17mm end realy makes a difference.
Im very happy with this lens and would recomend that if you want something to replace your standard lens without breaking the bank this is the one for you.

Fantastic upgrade!
Reviewed on Amazon.co.uk

What can I say? This lens was purchased as an upgrade to the very disappointing 18-55mm Canon kit lens that came with my 400D. This Tamron is leagues ahead of it in terms of build, and image quality.

To start with from the box this lens looks and feels so much more substantial than ANY of my Canon lenses. It is actually heavier than my 55-250mm telephoto and I see this as a good sign of the quality of construction and the materials used in the Tamron.

The 17-50mm focal range makes this an ideal everyday/walk around choice. I have used the lens at both extremes of wide and zoom and I'm really impressed with it. This lens doesn't have image stabilization on it, but I honestly haven't felt a need for it even in low light hand held shots, the f2.8 aperture across the whole focal range make it very versatile in low light scenarios if you need to take a snap in less than ideal conditions. Not to mention the fantastic depth of field that can be achieved with this lense.

I have used this lens for landscapes both at day and night, handheld and on a tripod. As well as portraits and car photoshoots. The Tamron has excelled at everything I've thrown at it, images are very sharp and colours are vibrant. I think the image quality rivals my Canon 50mm f1.8 prime lens. I have taken the same landscape photos back to back with the Tamron at 50mm on a tripod several times and I canon see a significant difference.

Buy this lens and bin the kit lens you will not be dissapointed!

Great low light lens. Excellent guarantee.
Reviewed on Amazon.co.uk

I bought this lens as I needed a faster lens for band photography - usually in murky pubs! I was a bit worried about the lack of VC, but as I need to be at 1/90th or more anyway to freeze the movement of the band it hasn't been a problem. I have to use it at 2.8 nearly all the time and the results are fine. Stopped down to 5.6 or 8 the sharpness is amazing. The lens feels solid. A bonus is the free five year guarantee - this needs to be registered for , and it did get a bit confusing as I bought it through Amazon UK, and it came from France, but the serial number showed it as from Germany. The registration is Europe-wide so there were no problems in the end - just need to translate the German registration confirmation documents now....

Cracking lens for a great price
Reviewed on Amazon.co.uk

Great lens. Arrived very promptly from Amazon who surpassed themselves this time. Ordered Saturday night with 1st class postage. Arrived Monday morning 9:30am!

I wanted a zoom lens for my A55 which I could use in lower light situations without breaking the bank. This fit the bill nicely. I found the Sony prime lens I had was great but hard to use in the real world as you can't always move into the places you want to be when taking photos indoors.

For the price you can't go wrong and I think this will be the default lens for me now.

Picture quality is great and it's quick to focus. My only criticism which is daft really is that it's a little noisy when focusing which means if like me you want to occasionally use it for video then it could be an issue. But given the price and the fact primarily it's a photo lens, it's only a very minor gripe.

Excellent value for money
Reviewed on Amazon.co.uk

Use this on a 50D along with a Canon 85mm F1.8 It's not as sharp or as contrasty as the Canon lens, but then that's unfairly comparing a zoom to a prime. For the money the Tamron is outstanding, just don't twist the focussing ring while in AF mode as I have done, luckily no damage, but if didn't feel clever when I did it! Images are razor sharp, I use it as a general walkabout but its great for landscapes so long as you zoom to above 20mm otherwise the barrel distortion becomes noticeable, though nowhere near as much as the standard Canon EF-S 17-85mm zoom kit lens. Examples of the images I have taken with it are here:[]Most of these were taken with either the EF-S 17-85mm, the EF 85mm and the Tamron, processed wth Adobe Lightroom.

Product Description

High luminosity allows for professional image composition

The Tamron 17-50mm is an extremely high-quality standard zoom with a high luminosity of 2.8 over the entire focal length range. It belongs to the Super Performance (SP) class of Tamron lenses distinguished by ultra high optical and mechanical quality. The high luminosity that this lens offers is ideal for low-light conditions and professional image composition. The result is images with smooth, even bokeh (background blur), where the subject is virtually released from the background.

The incredibly short minimum focus distance of only 27cm was achieved by using 3 XR glass elements (Extra Refractive) in the front group, coupled with a new mechanical design, whilst at the same time keeping the construction compact. The maximum magnification ratio of 1:4.5 and low weight of just 430g are added to the many features of this lens. Image defects are kept at an absolute minimum through the application of aspherical elements and LD (Low dispersion) glass as well as a special coating of internal glass surfaces (Internal Surface Coating). The result is especially sharp and high-quality images.

Super Performance for Discriminating Shooters (SP)

Tamron SP (Super Performance) series is a line of ultra-high-performance lenses designed and manufactured to the exacting specifications demanded by professionals and others who require the highest possible image quality. In creating SP lenses Tamron’s optical designers put their foremost priority on achieving superior performance parameters—they are all designed to a higher standard.

Di-II Lenses

Tamron Di-II lenses are engineered expressly for digital SLR cameras with image sensors commonly referred to as APS-C, measuring approximately 24mm x 16mm. Rendering an ideal image circle for APS-C sensors, Di-II lenses also include properties to optimise digital imaging performance.

Special Glass for Better Performance and More Compact Lens Designs

XR (Extra Refractive Index) glass can bend light rays at steeper angles, thereby decreasing the physical length of the lens while enhancing imaging performance by minimising optical aberrations. This has allowed Tamron to develop a line of short, small-diameter, light lenses without sacrificing lens speed, and actually upgrading image quality compared to older designs. XR glass yields enhanced optical power distribution, making possible many of the lens designs that bear the XR designation. XR glass, with its exceptional light-bending power, makes it possible to design a short-barrel lens with the same light-gathering ability (aperture value) as a long-barrel lens—even with a smaller lens diameter. By using this principle Tamron has been able to shorten the length of the entire optical system and produce light, compact lenses of the same speed, and also to provide great zoom ranges in lenses that are much more convenient to carry and hand-hold.

Image
Low dispersion glass reduces chromatic aberration
Low Dispersion (LD) Glass for Greater Lens Sharpness

Low dispersion (LD) glass elements in a lens help reduce chromatic aberration, i.e. the tendency of light of different colours to come to different points of focus at the image plane. Chromatic aberration reduces the sharpness of an image, but glass with an extremely low dispersion index has less of a tendency to separate (diffract) a ray of light into a rainbow of colours. This characteristic allows the lens designer to effectively compensate for chromatic aberration at the centre of the field (on axis), a particular problem at long focal lengths (the telephoto end of the zoom range), and for lateral chromatic aberration (towards the edges of the field) that often occurs at short focal lengths (the wide-angle end of the zoom range.)

Internal Focusing (IF) System

Internal focusing (IF) provides numerous practical benefits to photographers, including a non-rotating front filter ring that facilitates the positioning of polarizing and graduated filters, and more predictable handling as the lens length does not change during focusing. Crucially, Tamron’s Internal Focusing (IF) system provides a close minimum focusing distance (MFD) throughout its entire focusing range. Also, IF improves optical performance by minimising illumination loss at the corners of the image field, and helps to suppress other aberrations that become more troublesome at different focusing positions.

Image
Aspherical lens elements reduce spherical aberration
Hybrid Aspherical Elements Provide the Ultimate in Image Quality and Compactness

Tamron uses several hybrid aspherical lens elements in many lenses bearing the Aspherical designation. These innovative optics allow us to achieve exceptional image quality, and at the same time produce lenses that offer remarkable zoom ranges in extraordinarily compact packages. By perfecting theses cutting-edge advances for series production, Tamron has virtually eliminated spherical aberration and image distortion from the high-power-zoom series. Through the effective application of Hybrid Aspherical Technology, one lens element can take the place of multiple elements without compromising performance. This is what allows us to produce remarkably compact long-range lenses that deliver a uniformly high level of image quality at all focal lengths and apertures.
